Our Story

Two people.
Three cities.
One drive across the country. Survived med school and now residency.

This is the easy part.

It started, as many great things do, with a global pandemic.

March 2020. A 27-year-old Liz found herself back at her parents' house in Evanston, downloading dating apps not out of hope, but out of a genuine fear of forgetting how to talk to people her own age.

Somehow, impossibly, she matched with a boy. In Milwaukee. Not Chicago.

Their first date involved Doug meeting Liz and two of her friends — a true trial by fire he passed with flying colors…to then have a bout of food poisoning on their third day of knowing each other in person. He then drove to Evanston, met the family, and was immediately initiated into the sacred traditions of Cheever Covid Camp: 3pm cocktail hour, Sunday Settlers of Catan, and quality time with a very charming 3-year-old Penny.

After enough back-and-forth drives up and down I-94, Liz decided Milwaukee was worth it. They headed to Brooklyn, emptied her storage unit, and found an apartment on Lake Michigan that was so perfect they are fully aware they peaked early and will never top it.

Then came med school. Years of flashcards, late nights, and Liz gamely attempting to help Doug study while having absolutely no idea how to pronounce anything on the page. Doug matched into residency at UW Medicine in Seattle, and they packed up their lake life, loaded up a car, and drove across the country to a city that was new to them both.

Seattle became theirs. And after 21 consecutive days of work, Doug finally got a night off. He took Liz to their favorite dive bar — and proposed in the photobooth.

She said yes. Obviously.
